Catskill Ministry Education Center

The Catskill Ministry Education Center is located at New Hope Community Church, 45 Stockton Ave., Walton, NY.  

Courses are offered on-site, on-line and through correspondence.  The vision of the center is to provide the educational preparation for those seeking credentialing as an LMC, CMC and Elder.

Acts 12:24-1001: Free Methodist History and Polity Course: 2 credits

Course Description: The purpose of this course is to present in brief form the origin, development, beliefs, and practices of the Free Methodist Church, which has a rich heritage and history. The student will likely already be acquainted with much of the content of this study. S/he should give special attention to the matters with which he/she is not yet familiar. It is hoped he/she will enjoy reviewing the things already known, and evaluating his/her comprehension of what the church stands for, and why, and trying to find out something of the current mission of the Free Methodist Church.

Course description: This course is intended to equip the student for Gospel-radiant pastoral ministry through extended reflection upon, and exercises relevant to, the multiple spheres of communication in which God calls the pastor to engage. The assigned reading, lectures and class discussion, in conjunction with the written assignments, are designed to assist the student in discerning, synthesizing, and ministering from a Biblical theology of communication that will orient him for fruitful and faithful Gospel ministry.

Course Description: The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the literature of the Old Testament. Written over a span of more than one thousand years by numerous authors, the thirty-nine books of the Old Testament were written in a variety of literary genres and provide the reader with a clear description of who God is through his dealings with humanity and the nation of Israel.

Course Description: An introductory course in systematic theology from an evangelical, Wesleyan perspective that seeks to give students a clear foundation in Christian doctrine to further their personal discipleship and enable them to minister with theological integrity and biblical faithfulness. This course will cover such topics as God, the Bible, Sin, Salvation, the Church, and Eschatology.

Spiritual Formation and Prayer provides an opportunity for students to develop self-awareness in the context of their Christian faith and preparation for ministry. It equips students to reflect critically and constructively on their mission and vision, personal spiritual histories, and the strengths, weaknesses, and spirituality of their personality types. It also provides an opportunity for students to develop deeper and more satisfying prayer lives in the context of a global environment. As the essential relational discipline of the Christian journey, prayer is examined and experienced in its diverse ecclesial, ethnic, and cultural forms as found in Scripture, Christian history, and the Church.

Course Description: This course will explore the lives, thought, and legacy of John and Charles Wesley and consider the historical and social background that led to the revival of 18th century England. It will investigate the implications of the Wesleyan heritage and theology in respect to the nature of God, human nature, salvation and sanctification, spiritual growth, church life, worship, and social witness. In addition, attention will be given to the ongoing relevance of Wesleyan theology for ministry in the contemporary church.

Acts 12:24 1014 Biblical Hospitality and Encouragement- 3 credits

 

Course Description: This course will approach the theme of biblical hospitality from several theoretical and practical perspectives. The aim of the course is to provide students with following: 1) Sufficient biblical and historical context to understand the phenomenon of hospitality in the Christian tradition. 2) A philosophical and theological framework from which to conceive of the concept of hospitality – namely, through critical reflection upon the phenomenon and the practice of hospitality. In addition, the student will learn the how and why of Biblical encouragement.
